Months after the mass rape of Gisele Pelicot came to light, five French judges have delivered their verdicts on Thursday against the 51 men accused of drugging, raping and sexually assaulting the 72-year-old women.

Dominique Pelicot, the ex-husband of Gisèle Pelicot, has been found guilty of aggravated rape and been sentenced to 20 years in jail.

The court also found him found guilty of the attempted aggravated rape of the wife of one of the co-accused, Jean Pierre Marechal, Cillia, and taking indecent images of his daughter, Caroline, and his daughters-in-law, Aurore and Celine.

Jean-Pierre Marechal, has been accused of raping his own wife, by following the behaviour shown by Dominique Pelicot. He has been found guilty of raping his own wife and drugging her for five years and inviting Dominique to rape her too.

Along with Dominique and Jean-Pierre, around 50 other men have been accused of raping and sexually assaulting Ms Pelicot.

Dominuque Pelicot has been sentenced to prison for 20 years by the court and Jean-Pierre Marechal has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Prosecutors have requested a range of between four to 18 years for either aggravated rape or sexual assault for the remaining 49 accused.

Background Of The Case

Gisele Pelicot was raped and drugged for 10 years by over 50 men. The main accused is Pelicot's ex-husband - Dominique. The abuse, which started in 2011 went on for 10 years.

Dominique would drug his wife and recruit men to rape her. The defendants have claimed that Dominique "tricked them" into thinking Gisele had consented or was faking sleep as part of the act.

A total of 51 men, including Dominique are on trial. Of these, 35 men have denied the rape charges against them, despite video evidence.

The video evidence was discovered in 2020 on Dominique Pelicot's computer hard drive. Police collected around 20,000 explicit videos which showed the accused men raping the now 72-year-old woman.

Gisele decided to go through this mass trial publicly. Speaking to her lawyer, she said she understood how unique her case is and has a rare opportunity to "change society". She was right, because her case has pushed France to reconsider its rape laws.

"I'm lucky to have the evidence. I have the proof, which is very rare. So, I have to go through [all this] to stand for all the victims," she told her lawyer Mr Babonneau.

Pelicot watched all the video footage found and tried to understand what the men did and who they were in order to piece together her memory, which was foggy due to her being drugged for nearly 10 years.

Pelicot's children - 50-year-old David Pelicot, 38-year-old Florian Pelicot and 45-year-old Caroline Darian have also demanded justice for their mother and expect to see strict punishment for their father Dominique and the 50 men accused of raping and abusing their mother.

Along with Gisele, Caroline has also said that she believes Dominique abused and drugged her too. The 71-year-old man has been accused of violating his daughter's privacy by sharing images he secretly recorded of her online.

Caroline also talks of the trauma inflicted on herepoch game, her mother and their family due to the years of sexual abuse orchestrated by Dominique in her book 'Et j’ai cessé de t’appeler papa' (And I stopped calling you father).
